You may have heard teachers described as 'Ijazah holders.' But what does that actually mean, and why is it considered the gold standard of Quranic study?
A certified, connected chain
An Ijazah is a formal authorisation to transmit the Quran, granted by a qualified teacher. Crucially, it comes with a sanad — an unbroken chain of teachers connecting back, generation by generation, to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Why it matters
- It verifies precise, authentic recitation;
- It preserves the Quran exactly as transmitted;
- It authorises the holder to teach and certify others;
- It connects the student to a living tradition.
Who is it for?
An Ijazah suits advanced students with excellent Tajweed — and often Huffaz — who wish to be formally certified, including aspiring teachers. It is rigorous and rewarding.
How to begin
Start by perfecting your Tajweed and recitation with a certified teacher. When your recitation reaches the required standard, the formal assessment follows. It's a journey of refinement, not a quick certificate.
